HER FOCUS IS NOT SELDOMLY ABOUT THE ubiquity of ABOMINATION AND VIOLENCE, BUT RATHER PARADOXICALLY THIS STEMS FROM A COMPREHENSIVE FEELING OF LOVE FOR HUMAN AND ANIMALS. THIS LOVE IS OFTEN A THEME IN HER WORK. AS AN ARTIST, SHE DRAWS OUR ATTENTION TO THE poignant, distressing CONTRAST BETWEEN THIS LOVE FOR EVERYTHING THAT LIVES ON THE ONE SIDE, THE COLD RELATIONSHIPS AND AGGRESSION BETWEEN PEOPLE THEMSELVES, AND BETWEEN PEOPLE AND ANIMALS ON THE OTHER SIDE.<\/h4>\n<h4>LENAERTS&#8217; EXPRESSIVE PAINTINGS SOMETIMES TAKE THE FORM OF AN EXPLICIT Indictment, SUCH AS THE RECENT WORK &#8220;BEHAVIORISM I&#8221;, IN WHICH A MONKEY IS SUBJECT TO A SCIENTIFIC EXPERIMENT IN A LABORATORY. BUT ALSO IN WHAT APPEARS TO BE VERY A PEACEFUL SCENE, SUCH AS THE LANDSCAPE WITH THE FAIRY-TALE NEUSCHWANSTEIN CASTLE, THERE IS A HIDDEN CRITICAL POTENTIAL. IT IS A COPY OF A WATERCOLOR BY AN ARTIST THAT HAD BEEN TRUMPED IN HIS ARTISTIC AMBITIONS AND THEN DECIDED TO BECOME A DICTATOR. LENAERTS HOLDS A MIRROR TO US. OFTEN IT&#8217;S A DARK MIRROR, WHICH WE PERHAPS MAY PREFER NOT TO LOOK INTO.<\/h4>\n<h4>\u00a0<\/h4>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\">&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8211;<\/h4>\n<h4>\u00a0<\/h4>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In haar werk brengt Liesbet Lenaerts verslag uit van verhalen en gebeurtenissen die haar intens raken. Thema&#8217;s en beelden uit de media, de recente geschiedenis of de wetenschap vormen voor haar de aanleiding tot een kritische stellingname. Daarbij focust ze niet zelden op de alomtegenwoordigheid van gruwel en geweld, paradoxaal genoeg net vanuit een omvattend gevoel van liefde voor mens en dier. Ook deze liefde vormt vaak een thema in haar werk. Als kunstenaar vestigt ze onze aandacht op het schrijnende, aangrijpende contrast tussen enerzijds deze liefde voor alles wat leeft en anderzijds de kille \u00a0verhoudingen en agressie tussen mensen onderling en tussen mensen en dieren.<\/span><\/h4>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Lenaerts&#8217; expressieve schilderijen nemen soms \u00a0de vorm aan van een expliciete aanklacht, zoals in het recente doek \u2019Behaviorisme I\u2019 waarin een aap in een laboratorium onderworpen wordt aan een wetenschappelijk experiment. Maar ook in een ogenschijnlijk zeer vredig tafereel, zoals een \u00a0landschap met het sprookjesachtige kasteel van Neuschwanstein, schuilt een verborgen kritisch potentieel. Het gaat immers om een kopie van een aquarel van een kunstenaar die gefnuikt werd in zijn artistieke ambities en dan maar besloot dictator te worden.
